Junior Dolphin

Practice time:

Junior A: 45 minutes/practice, 1 practice/week

Junior B: 45 minutes/practice, 2 practices/week

This program is an introductory program to competitive swimming for children ages 5/6 to 10 that runs from September to June. Children entering into this program must be comfortable in the leisure pool without a life jacket and must be able to put their face in the water. The program begins with the swimmers learning basic skills of competitive swimming. The main objective by the end of the season is to have the swimmers in this program be comfortable swimming full-lengths in the competitive pool and achieve the skills they need to enter into the Devo 1 program within the Club.

There will be opportunities for fun in-house Team races and perhaps even swim meets as swimmers become more skilled and confident.

Developmental (Devo) 1

Practice time:

60 minutes/practice, 1 practice/week

The Devo 1 Program is the first level of the competitive programming within the Dolphin Swim Club and runs from September to June. Swimmers are generally ages 7 to 10 years old but age is not a criterion for entering into the program. Children entering into this program must be able to complete one length of the competitive pool without assistance.

This program is an extension of the Junior Dolphin program, focusing on the basic skills of competitive swimming. Swimmers in this program may attend in-house Team races and compete at swim meets on the Island with option to attend one or two off-Island meets based on SDSC time standards.

Development (Devo) 2

Practice time:

60 minutes/practice, 2 to 3 practices/week

The Devo 2 Program is the second level of competitive swimming within the Dolphin Swim Club and runs September to June. Children entering this program have completed Devo 1 or have met the SDSC time standards or skill requirements of our Head Coach.

The swimmers in this program have four recognizable strokes and are familiar with racing. The main objectives of this program are improving stroke techniques, and basic competitive swimming skills such as streamlines, starts and turns. These swimmers compete at all Island meets and have the option to attend off-Island invitational meets based on SDSC time standards.

Advanced 1

Practice time:

60 – 120 minutes/practice, 1 to 3 practices/week

The Advanced 1 Program focuses on competitive swimming within the Dolphin swim Club and runs September to June or July with optional summer programming. Children entering this program have completed Devo 2 or met the SDSC time standards or skill requirements of our Head Coach.

The swimmers in this program have four recognizable strokes and are familiar with racing and swim meets. The main objectives of this program are improving stroke techniques, and basic competitive swimming skills such as streamlines starts and turns. These swimmers compete at all Island meets and have the option to attend off-Island invitational meets.

Advanced 2

Practice time:

60 – 120 minutes/practice, 4 practices/week

Swimmers in this program have an increased training commitment and dry land (fitness and strength) training is introduced, in addition to the water practices. The main objectives for this program are developing racing techniques and strategies, achieving personal best times, and achieving regional championship meet standards. Swim meets become more important in this training program. Swimmers meeting the required SDSC and meet time standards or requirements of our Head Coach will have significant travel off-Island to larger regional swim meets and meets outside of the Maritime provinces.

Advanced 3

Practice time:

60 – 120 minutes/practice, 5 to 6 practices/week

This is the top level of competitive swimming within the Dolphin Swim Club and runs September to July with optional additional programming or meets in the summer.

This training program requires the highest level of commitment. The training schedule is very demanding, six water workouts, and additional dry land workouts. Individual goals vary amongst the group, however, the main objectives of the program are refining racing techniques and strategies, achieving personal best times, and qualifying for regional and national championship meets such as Canada Games, Eastern Canadians, Age Group Nationals, and Senior Nationals.. Similar to the Devo 2 program, swim meets are very important to this training program and swimmers will have significant travel off-Island to larger regional swim meets and swim meets outside of the Maritime province as determined by the Head Coach based on SDSC and meet times standards.
